The Witcher game is based on the novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski, the most popular fantasy author in Poland. Three of these books are already translated into english yet: The last Wish, Sword of Destiny and Blood of Elves (status 2010). Much more short stories exists of the famous Witcher Geralt of Rivia, but they are only available in polish at this time.
Story of the game:
The game begins in Kaer Morhen, an old ruined fortress where the witchers live. Geralt of Rivia was nearly dead when the witchers found him and he has to learn all things again. During the following assault on the fortress the player learns through a tutorial how to fight and use his skills step by step. The player learns to know the other witchers here and it is a bit pity that in the rest of the game they never are shown again. I hope for the sequel they are included more somehow...
As in the books Geralt has to make decisions, decisions that are not just evil or good but are hanging somewhere between, because the world is not just depending on evil or good. It is a dark world Sapkowski settled his witcher-stories in and so is the game.
Elves and dwarves are only a secondary class, racism and violence is also included in the game like the fact that witchers are mutants and for this not very likely be seen. They are paid for slaying monsters and nobody wants to have other things to do with them.
The game also includes Geralts encounters with women, there is no sex shown but within the game he can collect "sexcards" with nice pictures of those women. And now lets travel a bit further into the depths of the gamestory.
As mentioned before, you start with your main character Geralt in Kaer Morhen. After defeating the intruders and learning how the skills work you leave Kaer Morhen to find the stolen secrets of the witchers. Your way leads to Vizima, a dark city with all kinds of violence, racism and sex. And not to forget the enemies...
At some points Geralt has to make decisions, you as the player can decide whatever you think is best. The story goes on with Geralt searching for contracts to fulfill, slaying monsters to make money (as witchers do) and find out about the stolen secrets.
You have to decide to fight along with the Scoia'Tael, a non-human rebelling group fighting for their rights, or you can fight with the "Order of the Flaming Rose" and cut off the revolts.
However, you have to go to many places to reach your own goal, you have to fight a sorcerer and his summoned monsters, you have to find out about a child which is telling about old prophecies, you encounter an old fishfolk named Vodyanoi and you have to fight against your destiny (or maybe not?).
However, the game has three different endings, you can try to stay neutral, or fight for one of the sides. Which is good and which is evil? Well, there is not a good and not an evil, it depends on your point of view if something is better than the other, that's all. That's true witchery...
Player Charakter and Witcher:
Sadly the player has not the option to play another character than Geralt of Rivia, 'cause he's the main actor and the hero of the story. So in game you always start as the witcher Geralt.
There are also some more important characters between the witchers, they are no less important than Geralt but in the game they are not often to be seen.
You can learn more about Geralt and all other witchers of Kaer Morhen on the following site:
Characters: Witchers
NPCs:
Geralt of Rivia has to interact with several NPC's during his adventure, some he has to rescue from impossible situations, others will help him with his search for the stolen secrets of the witchers.
The most important NPC's can be found here:

Important places:
Beside the great city Vizima there are several smaller villages and special places well worth seeing.
Kaer Morhen is such a special place, here the tutorial of the Witcher is playing and the player will learn the skills of the witchers. From here the player begins his journey to explore more places and help the inhabitants.
The most important places in The Witcher are listed here:

Bossmonsters:
There are many different monsters in The Witcher, some of them are more dangerous than the normal monsters, the so called bossmonsters.
Bossmonsters are strong creatures, they are mostly bigger than normal monsters, look terrific and have special skills to make Geralt's live really difficult.
Some of the most important bossmonsters that you'll encounter in the game are listed here:
Dangerous Monsters
Normal Monsters:
Surely there are very normal monsters in The Witcher, such like nasty spiders, drowned dead, ghuls, big bloedzuigers and many more.

RavenTeam Mod - "Evil Decision":
The module "Evil Decision" was submitted for the D'Jinni Modding Contest that CDPR started early in 2008. It was the only non-Polish module to receive what CDPR chose to call an "honorable mention", i.e. it was ranked third, since CDPR decided to award only a first prize and only mention the second and third placed mods. "Evil Decision" was developed by the RavenTeam and is playable in both English and German. The playing time is about 3-4 hours.
Description for "Evil Decision":
What's wrong in Ban Glean, so wrong that Eskel got drunk rather than face it? Geralt has received a message from Eskel, asking him to take over a contract that Eskel claims to be unable fulfill himself. But when Geralt arrives in the village of Ban Glean, he finds that Eskel is still there and apparently healthy, if a bit drunk. Geralt sets out to learn about the contract he's expected to fulfill and more importantly, what's going on in the village that could upset even an experienced Witcher.

There are several ways to complete this game. You can make every decision you want and there are three different endings. You can help the Scoia'Tael and fight against the Order of the Flaming Rose, or vice versa, or you can stay neutral. I think the neutral way is the most difficult, because you have to be very careful to really stay neutral.
However, my walkthrough is the Scoia'Tael path, other ways are different and quests can also differ from the ones that are described here. But even if you walk along this way, there are quests that differ from this description depending on your choices throughout the game.
The walkthrough for the Scoia'Tael path can be found here:

The Witcher Toolset:
The "D'Jinni Adventure Editor", the toolset of The Witcher, is in fact a real good toolset, 'cause it's based on the Neverwinter Nights toolset. Only problem with D'Jinni is, that CDPR has managed to change it in a way that one can not really speak of functionality yet.
But: As soon as you know the most important problems and manage to keep them small, you can create very good adventures with it. Even beginners can learn to use that toolset, at least if they'll get a good tutorial for it.
You can find such a tutorial here on my site:
